About this work

Description

A neatly but very incorrectly written copy of the pamphlet of John Caius (1510-1573) on the Sweating Sickness, called De Ephemera Britannica.

The copyist was ignorant of Greek, for he has left blanks for the insertion of Greek words, which have been added by another hand. There are many careless mistakes throughout which the second writer has corrected in the same manner as printers' proofs are marked.

This copy was evidently made from a manuscript, perhaps the original, and was executed prior to 1721, for in that year Caius's tract, which was written 1556, was first printed by William and John Innys, London, 12mo, 133 pages.

On fo. 3 of this manuscript, under the title, is the note: "non ante editus."
