J.-L. Contugi died in 1719, aged about 35, having in 1700 been promised the extension of his father's royal privilege on attaining 25 (see C.S. Le Paulmier, L'Orviétan: histoire d'une famille de charlatans du Pont-neuf, Paris, [1893?], spelling Contugi's predecessors as Jean Vitrario and Hieronymo Ferranti).
