About this work

Description

Herbal medicine. Balsamita major (Alecost or Costmary). Also known as Tanacetum balsamita. Straggly plant with ovate leaves and yellow 'button' flowers. Popular in the 16th century. Has aromatic, spicy leaves, once used to flavour home-brewed beer and in salads. Also used to calm upset stomachs and as a dried component of pot pourri. Also called Bibleleaf by early American colonists who used the plant's long leaves as book-markers.
