About this work

Description

This video shows teenagers expressing opinions and stating their experiences in relation to alcohol. The film was designed for discussion by teenagers and brings to the foreground the real issues of lack of alternative places to go instead of the pub, peer pressure and the anomalies of the law (where 16 year olds can get married but not drink legally). At the beginning there are engaging shots of unruly looking school children with testimony (in the style of vox pops) stating their experiences. Chief Inspector, Albert Ridgway, of the Edinburgh City Police states that alcohol is a drug and that although seemingly socially acceptable, there is growing teenage problem of underage drinking. An older anonymous alcoholic talks about his problem. There is a stark contrast between the attitudes of the older generation and the young people, although there is quite a spectrum of opinions from liberalism to absteenism. The focus is very much on the social consequences rather than the health ones.
