Burgess (loc. cit.) records Mathäus Merian (1593-1650) as the artist "M", but he died before the present sitter was born. Attributed therefore to Mathäus Merian the younger (1621-1687), who was also active in Basel and was the teacher of Bartholomäus Kilian
