    ALTERATIONS IN THE RED GLOBULES IN MALARIA INFECTION, AND ON THE ORIGIN OE MELANJSMIA. Of all tlie changes whicli malarious infection determines in tlie human organism, thè most characteristic is that which takes place in thè blood, and is called mclancemici.* This dyscrasia consists in thè presence in thè blood of brownish yellow or black pigment, rarely free, generally collected in thè white celi elements. The existence of pigment in thè blood is easily verihed by ex- amining a very thin film ; and in thè hodies of persons who bave died from pernicious fevers a great ahundance of pigment is found, free, or inclosed in thè celi elements, in thè blood vessels of thè spleen, marrow, brain, kidneys, &c. Whcn thè melamemia has ceased, there remains melanosis of thè organs, i.e., deposit of granules and pigment masses around thè vessels and perilobular connective tissue of thè hver, and in like manner in and around thè lymphatics. The melanosis witnesses to thè antecedent melancemia. The origin of this pigment has heen by almost all autliors derived from thè colouring matter of thè blood, but there has been no agreement as to thè site or manner of its formation, as will be seen from thè following résumé of thè history of melanaemia. The ancicnt school of physicianst held that sometimes black material was formed in thè spleen and blood of thè portai vein, oapable of giving rise to diseases. The “ black bile ” formed an Melarne tuia, so far as we now know, occnrs only in malarious infection, and possesses characters so special that one cannot conceive how they bave been confounded by some authois with thè hmmorrhagic diathesis, Addison’s disease, ite. t Frerichs, Clinic ofLiver Diseases.
