This small collection of material received from Sir Ernest Cowell, relating to his First World War work, was discovered in the Secretary's office of the then Wellcome Institute in 1982 and added to the Library's archive holdings. It would appear to have been sent by Sir Ernest to the Institute in 1969 in connection with its exhibition on "Medicine and Surgery in the Great War".

Sir Ernest Marshall Cowell, KBE, CB, DSO, MD, FRCS (1886-1971) took his M.D. at London University in 1909 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1911. From 1914 to 1918 he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. In 1922 he became surgeon at Croydon General Infirmary and continued to practise in Croydon for the remainder of his career (becoming surgeon of the Mayday Hospital in 1938) with the exception of war service 1939-1946. During the Second World War he once again served in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was Director of Medical Services for the Allied Forces in North Africa during 1942-1944.
