Ink and brush drawing from a handwritten copy of the anonymous text Dingchuang yaojue (Essential Art of Boils), executed in 1874 (13th year of the Tongzhi reign period of the Qing dynasty). It indicates the disease location for boil in the middle of the eyebrows (mei zhongxin ding). This condition is attributed to an attack by fire toxins (huodu) rising from the liver and spleen. It is treated by needling and opening (tiaoci), at locations including yinbai (Concealed White), dadun (Big Mound), bailao (Hundred Labours) [i.e. dazhui (Great Vertebra)], qijie (Seventh Segment), the tip of the index finger, dihe (Earthly Union) maimen (Pulse Portal - the place on the wrist where the pulse is visible), ermen (Ear Portal), tianting (Celestial Courtyard) and the eye socket. Rhinoceros horn, antelope horn, rehmannia root (dihuang) etc. are administered orally, with the addition of rhubarb if necessary.
