In his 'Admonitio' (pp. [i]-ii) the author explains that this thesis was written to replace a thesis on the intermittent fevers rejected by the Medical Faculty because of its support of Erasmus Darwin's theories in preference to those of William Cullen. The rejected thesis was published independently in Edinburgh in the same year.
