About this work

Description

This talk was broadcast on the BBC's Home Service in 1962 and it filled the interval of a musical performance from the Royal Festival Hall, London. At the time of the recording Cicely Williams was Professor of Maternal-Child Health at the American University, Beirut. Drawing on her experience of working in maternal and child health Cicely Williams argues that improving health care in the developing countries is a more effective way of controlling the population than imposing birth control programmes. She recounts numerous cases around the World of unnecessary malnutrition which arises from chosing the wrong foodstuffs (processed white rice instead of brown) or underfeeding - large meals in the evening and very little to eat during the day. She comments on breastfeeding and also paediatric care in hospital with the mother being present.
