Biographical note

Astronomer. Long-term member of the Society for Diffusing Useful Knowledge. While practising as a lawyer in Blackheath he built up an astronomical observatory. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society 1841 and was President from 1854-1857. Endorsed and encouraged the policy of merchant captains keeping meteorological records of winds and currents during voyages. In 1860 elected President of the British Society.
