About this work

Description

The lake is near Naples. The Grotta del Cane is in the centre and the steam bath of San Germano is on the right. Three men take a dog into the grotto to demonstrate the experiment whereby noxious gases emitted from it cause asphyxiation of the dog. On the left, two local men suspend an asphyxiated dog in the lake in order to revive it: two tourists attend the experiment

Lettering

Lacus Anianus Lettering includes: "Charoneum antrum Grotta dei cani" (on the grotto), "Sudatorium S. Germani" (on the bath-house). Banderolle "Temerariis" (i.e. "For the foolhardy") amid the vapours emerging at the back of the grotto, where a skeleton representing death threatens to cast an arrow at those entering. On verso, text describing the subject (pp. 33-34).
