About this work

Description

Documentary looking at the latest developments in cancer treatment which features the lives of three people suffering from cancer - Ray, Phil and Rosemary. Ray was diagnosed with prostate cancer seven years ago and has no treatment options open except to try a new treatment from a pioneering radiotherapy robot, Cyberknife, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Ray is the first patient ever to be treated by Cyberknife. Nick van As is in charge of this technology and he demonstrates the robot and explains how it works. Phil's father died from prostate cancer seventeen years ago so his own diagnosis hit him very hard. He has agreed to undergo a new surgical treatment to remove his prostate, the Da Vinci robot, pioneered by surgeon Chris Ogden. This is demonstrated and Phil's operation is shown in detail. A ground-breaking new drug treatment for melanoma has been offered to Rosemary, a retired school teacher. Without it she would be likely to die within the next three months. Richard Marais and Naz Rahman explain how the drug treatment will work and what it might mean for the future of drug treatments for cancer. All the treatments shown have very positive results.
