About this work

Description

The red staining (alizarin red) shows a region in the head of a day 14 embryonic duck that is undergoing membrane bone ossification. Membrane bone forms much of the face and skull. This is different to the other bones in the body where cartilage is formed first and this is then replaced with bone.
