Description

Essai sur la physiologie. Paris: Le Prieur. 1764. Three leaves containing pen-drawn figures, have been bound in between p. 220 and p. 221. On the verso of p. 253: 'Fini et colationné le dit ouvra[ge] à paris et fini le 5e octobre 1770. J. B. Masson Étudiant en Chirurgie'. The 'Essai' was first published in 1756, and a third edition appeared in 1778. Produced in Paris.

1 volume 2 ll. + pp. vii + 253 + 2 ll. 4to. 26 x 18 cm. Original gilt-stamped calf binding. Covers stamped with arms of Louis XV. ?, though these show considerable variation from those illustrated in Guigard's 'Nouvel armorial du Bibliophile', Vol. I, pp. 26, 27.

Purchased 1931.

Biographical note

The author became professor of surgery at the Hôpital de Saint Côme in Paris at the early age of twenty-two, and a member of the Académie de Chirurgie in 1750. He also received the singular honour of being chosen 'Échevin de Paris': he was also a member of the Académie des Sciences of Paris. Produced in Paris.
