Biographical note

Anderson, Robert (1749-1830), literary scholar and biographer, born in Lanarkshire. Anderson was for a time the editor of the Edinburgh Magazine, a position which enabled him to encourage young men of talent and promise. His house was for many years one of the literary centres of Edinburgh. He died of ‘dropsy in the chest’ in 1830.
