Description

"Caricature sketch of the Old Infirmary, Edinburgh, during Professor James Syme's time. The sketch was made by Mr Johnston and presented to Sir Adam Ferguson, Bt. The scene shows the reduction of a dislocation of the right shoulder before the days of anaesthetics; the figure holding the arm represents Professor Syme, Lister's father-in-law. The artist "Mr Johnston" has not been identified. His style is similar to that of caricatures of Robert Knox published by R.H. Nimmo in the 1820s
