Description

Various items deriving from an exhibition mounted by Glaxo. The items are numbered according to the Exhibition Key. In some instances, there is only an empty envelope (as noted):

Exhibition Key:
Six polystyrene information display panels referring to the numbered items listed below, and providing further information about them. Each panel 260 x 110mm.

1-2. Auto Injectors x 2. One manufactured by Glaxo. The other manufactured by Owen Mumford Ltd - in a bespoke zipped plastic case, with instruction leaflet.

3. Empty envelope marked "Pharmacy". Envelope not retained.

5-9. Inhalers x 3. Acc96/59. (Envelope records, in pencil: "A&H Ventolin Rotahaler removed from here 2.xii.97 for J Hart").

10. Empty bubble-wrap, marked Acc96/59 - not retained.

11. Mounted photograph (b/w) of Penicillin advertisement. "The Work We're Doing Now Will Help To Heal Our Wounded / A hundred phials like this will be needed to save a seriously injured soldier". Image dimensions: 160 x 235mm.

12. Photograph (b/w) of Sir Alexander Fleming and Dr A H 'Sandy' Campbell. 240 x 190mm.

13. Photograph (b/w) of Professor Giuseppe Brotzu, "who began the cephalosporin story in 1945 when he discovered antibiotic activity in a mould taken from sewage outfall off the coast of Sardinia". 150 x 200mm.

14. Cephalosporin notebook (1954-1974) compiled by Derek Fletcher.

15. Noted in Key as "Brown's Opacity Tubes" with annotation by hand stating "actually Wellcome Opacity Tubes". This item is now separately listed in the present catalogue as WF/M/Obj/42 [Closed].

16. Hemming's Filters. Used in centrifugation. Pre-World War II.

17. Photograph (b/w) of Reita Faria (Miss World 1967, and a medical student from Bombay) visiting Glaxo diptheria laboratory, Greenford. 195 x 150mm.

18. Cortisone acetate bottle, used by Dr Joe Elks, former Director of Chemistry Division , Greenford (retired in 1982 after 41 years' service).

19. Commemorative booklet (1951). "Issued on the Completion of Enlarged Premises for the Research Division of Glaxo Laboratories Ltd at Greenford, Middx." 44pp, with photographs and fold-out floor plan (inside back-cover).

20. Two Glaxo Christmas Greetings cards (c1950s), showing images of exterior and interior of research laboratories.

21. Information booklet (1964) produced by Farbenfabriken Bayer Ag concerning "Baycovin" (diethyl pyrocarbonate), a substance protecting acidic beverages from decomposition by micro-organisms. 14pp.
