About this work

Description

This documentary looks at what has become known as 'superior autobiographical memory'. There are a small group of people who claim to be able to remember everything, which flies in the face of scientific understanding of the brain. Aurelien, a 20 year old university student, impresses with his recall of events throughout his life. In fact as the documentary progresses, it becomes clear that he does have superior recall, corroborated by memory champion Dominic O'Brien. There is also a woman in America, Jill Price, who has disturbingly vivid memories which she feels has ruined her health, and her life. Dr Gary Marcus developed a theory about Price's memory which led her to feel betrayed by the medical profession; he claimed that she was obsessively and compulsively remembering rather than having a 'gift'. Dr Giuliana Mazzoni takes Aurelien to her memory lab in Italy and performs a fMRI scan which shows areas in the brain associated with visualisation which is helping Aurelien 'retrieve' his memories.
