Elevation and plan of the altar. The signs of the zodiac are shown in relief around the outside of the bowl. According to Piranesi, the altar came from Cicero's villa in Tusculum, near Rome, and was in Piranesi's own collection

Altare antico di marmo dedicato ad Apollo, indicandolo i dodici segni del zodiaco disposti nella circonferenza della sua gran conca, la quale nel suo interno, è gentilmente striata con una testa di Medusa collocata nel centro. Questo monumento è stato ritrovato nella villa Tusculana di Cicerone, e si vede fra le altre antichità nella raccolta del cav. Piranesi.
