Description

Cours de chirurgie. Notes of lectures on surgery, including extracts from Paré and other 16th century French authors. With a 'Sommaire de tous les os' and a few other additions by François Martinet, dated 1607. On fol. 62v, rough pen-drawing of a trepanning instrument; on fol. 100v of a 'faucheur'; and on fol. 126 of a horse. P. Martinet's name appears on fol. 43, and on fol. 80 'Fin du livre des playes en particulier. 1585 Novembre le dernier jour P. Martinet'. There is also an unsigned note by him 'Faict le 28 novembre 1585' on fol. 74v. 'F. Martinet 1607' appears on the verso of fol. 1 at the end of a 'Declaration des lettres de la seconde figure des os'. These drawings are now wanting. Below this signature is 'Ex libris Joannis Havet 6me 7bre 1680'. On fol. 74 is a note by F. Martinet mentioning his marriage in 1607, and below the announcement of the birth of François Bataille (his daughter?) on July 24, 1616. Fol. 26 'Ce présent livre apartient [sic] à Helie Laviarde, Chirurgien'. 92v 'Nicolas Villert a sorti de chez Monsieur de Laviarde la quinzième du mois d'aoust 1669'. 99 'Je suis entrè chez Mons. Laviarde le quinzieme du mois d'aoust 1669 et d'y suis sorti le quinzième dudit mois de 1669'. 146v 'Nicolas Villert Compagnon Chirurgien à Buzancy chez Monsieur de Laviarde l'an de grâce mil six cent soixante neuf'. 170 'L'an mil six cent soixante sept, le quinzième jour du mois d'aoust Nicolas Villert a entré chez Monsieur de Laviarde pour aprendre [sic] l'art de Chirurgie a Buzancy-1667'. 88 'Fait par moy pierre Baudin Chirurgien demeurant à Dun [querque?] 1684'. 159v 'Ce présent livre est à moy ce 15e join 1684. Baudin'. Inside the upper cover are three seals in red wax lettered 'E.M.,' and on the verso of the last leaf 5 similar seals. These are at the end are affixed on a document pasted on the back of the last leaf of the original MS., which is torn. The document is a declaration that the widow of François Corbeau 'a fait faire au Bureau de l'Administration un depôt du Certificat de Résidance'. It is signed and dated at Crest 29 frimaire 3e année (19 Dec. 1794): with the official stamp of the 'District de Crest'. Pasted inside the lower cover is a form of legal receipt signed J. Rogeaulx dated 15 [?]. In the margin is written 'L'an de grace mil six cent sept' apparently written by the younger Martinet. The deed itself is damaged in the outer margin, and the rest of the date is missing.

1 volume 170 ll. folio 30 x 20 cm. Original calf binding damaged: each cover with 5 circular stamps lettered 'Pierre Martinet'. Last leaf torn, and repaired.
