Biographical note
Chevereul was educated at the Collége de France, and elected a Member of the Académie des Sciences in 1826. He was professor of organic chemistry at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle, and Director form 1860 to 1879. He is mainly famous for his work on the composition of animal fats and saponification. He was elected F.R.S. in 1857.
