Description
Jean Bart (Jan Bart, Johan Baert etc.), wearing extravagant coat and hat, holding tobacco pipe, with utensils for food and drink on table to right. Born in Dunkirk, served in the Dutch fleet, subsequently fought successfully in the French fleet in wars against the alliance of the Dutch and the English, was renowned for his boldness and enterprise

Impression catalogued bears date 1722 on verso in ink in an old hand
Latin tag means: "Emerging from the dregs of the people, [he became] the ungrateful plunderer of his fatherland", referring to his changing sides from the Netherlands to France

Apparently a Dutch print. The criticism of Bart for going over to France implies a Dutch point of view, and the lettering is similar to that on prints published in Amsterdam by Pieter Schenk (Schenck), e.g. his portrait of Johann Karl von Thüngen (Wellcome Library no. 810660i)
