Biographical note

A meeting was held between NCT and the Walton Doctors' Club in Nov 1959, where it was suggested that the NCT form a corps of "Labour Companions" to sit with mothers during the first stage of labour. Subsequently, the NCT asked for members to volunteer to "labour sit" and wrote to doctors to request their permission for helpers to sit in on the labour. The volunteers were also called Backscratcher volunteers.
