About this work

Description

He is John McCann (1805-1843), who was admitted to the Richmond Hospital, Dublin, in 1840. Smith examined him both before and after his death and identified the tumours as neuromata (neuromas, neurifibromata). The artist has depicted a fig leaf on his genitals
