About this work

Description

The doctor in the photograph is Tsawang Smanla. He continues in a tradition passed down from his father. He works for the Save the Children Fund, and provides a free medical service in return for collective help with his household and farm. In the photograph he is wearing Western style clothing, though in winter he wears a traditional long woollen robe ('goncha')
