About this work

Description

Filmed entirely on Baffin Island, Nunavut, in the communities of Iqaluit and Qikiqtarjuaq, this programme looks at breast feeding in isolated Inuit communities. Scientists thought that the breast milk of mothers there would be absolutely pure but when they tested it they discovered it was loaded with chemicals migrated from the South. In fact it seems that there is no woman anywhere in the world who doesn't have chemicals such as flame retardants in her breast milk. Artist and film maker Roz Mortimer depicts life in this frozen community in a dream-like manner, showing landscapes, traditional feasts of raw frozen seal meat and dances. Members of the community describe how they feel to discover chemicals in their breast milk.
