About this work

Description

There are earlier engravings of this composition, e.g. by Giulio Bonasone and by J. Saenredam after a drawing by Goltzius after the painted fresco by Polidoro, but neither of those two engravings identifies the subject as a member of the Scipio family. Presumably meant to be Publius Cornelius Scipio (d. 211 BC)), who was wounded at the battle of the Ticino river against Hannibal in the second Punic War (Livy book XXI, and Polybius book III)
