About this work

Description

Fern Hall Asylum, at Osbaldwick, York, was a private asylum, run by Thomas Allis (formerly Superintendent of The Retreat 1823 - 1841) after 1841. Later it was run by William and Elizabeth Pumphrey (his daughter and son in law), who, after the lease of the Osbaldwick premises expired, moved it to Lawrence House (the former residence of Samuel Tuke). In 1872 they transferred the establishment to Robert Baker (Medical Superintendent of The Retreat 1874 - 1892). These items, judging by the note at the beginning of the Visitors Book and the photographs inserted, may have been presented to The Retreat in the 1880s.
