Biographical note

The trip subsequently called 'The Long Safari' was undertaken by Burkitt and two companions, Edward ('Ted') Williams and Cliff Nelson. Ted had worked for years in a mission hospital in Northern Uganda and Cliff had recently left a government appointment to run a mission hospital in Tanzania. All were friends. As well as camping equipment they took a cine camera, typewriter and a tape recorder. The trip attracted publicity which led to it appearing in Readers Digest and subsequently the centre of a book which was published in America under the title 'Mr Burkitt in Africa' but subsequently in England under the title 'The Long Safari'.
