In the letter Kingsley discusses the Hungarian uprising of 1848, the new two-shilling coins recently introduced to the United Kingdom, the writings of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), the British cholera epidemic of 1848-1849, the activities of mutual acquaintances, the literary circles into which he has been introduced through his brother Charles (individuals mentioned include the Christian socialist F.D. Maurice (1805-1872), the author William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) and the artist and illustrator John Tenniel (1820-1914)), and his own republican sentiments.
