Correspondence regarding eligibility to Rhodes Sholarships in South Africa. "The initial problem is that four scholarships are tied to schools for which, de facto at least, election of a black or coloured candidate is impossible. This is incompatible with clause 24 of the Will, the only clause twice endorsed by the testator." (Extract from Paton, 'Note on the South African Scholarships' 10 March, 1972.) The file includes Opinion of Counsel (Coward Chance) on the position of the Trust, and of individual Trustees, if they consented to put forward proposals for private legislation to alter the four South African Scholarships in question.
