About this work

Description

In 1968 the BBC made a programme called 'The Broken Bridge' which followed the lives of two autistic children - Phillip Morrall aged 11, and Iris Faith aged 8. Both children underwent 'operant conditioning' therapy with US psychiatrist Irene Kassorla. This programme looks back at highlights of the 1968 documentary (including detailed therapy sessions with Kassorla) and a further 1974 follow-up documentary on the childrens' progress which also charts the changes in Kassorla's life as she becomes something of a 'celebrity psychoanalyst.' The families of Phillip and Iris recount their experiences of growing up with severe autism and the effect of Kassorla's therapy on the two children. Phillip now lives with his elderly mother while Iris has spent all her adult life in residential care.
