About this work

Description

Various items of correspondence, and research notes concerning the Mrs Bullows's Trust, its connection to Cooper family history, and the question of continuing trusteeship.

Notes in the file record that in his Will (1885), William Cooper left a legacy of £1000 to Emma, wife of Joseph Bullows of Sutton. "The wife of Joseph Bullows, Ironfounder, Sutton Coldfield, was Emma Simnett. Emma Simnett was the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Simnett, Ironbridge, Staffs. Hannah Simnett's maiden name was Smith and she was sister to Mary Smith who married William Cooper (the founder). Therefore Emma Simnett was niece of Mary, William Cooper's wife."

In 1914, R M Foot wrote to solicitors about the matter, reluctant to spend "a penny more than is absolutely necessary" in legal costs, noting that "at the present moment the whole Trust does not even afford sufficient income to support Mrs Bullows." Surviving eventual beneficiaries at the time were noted as "Mrs De Vargas, a Mrs Shore who resides in New Zealand, and another brother...." In 1923, Foot responded to various questions put by The Estate Duty Office, Inland Revenue, Somerset House, London WC2. The file includes a marriage register search application made in 1942 by J A Hill.
