About this work

Also known as

Guinea worm : Guinea Coast, Ghana. 2.
The enemy in the night. 3.

Description

Three short films. The first: Yaws, follows a medical team, as it treats local families suffering with yaws. We are shown footage of all ages suffering the symptoms of Yaws. The second film; is similar to the first, but this time we are shown treatment being given for the Guinea Worm. It is clear that this also an educational film, encouraging the use of clean water, rather than using contaminated river water. In one sequence we see a man suffering from guinea worm, washing his legs in the river, while at the same time a woman is seen collecting water from the same river to take home. This is compared to villagers seen using clean water from a pump. The third film: An entertaining malaria prevention propaganda film which tells the story of a young man struck down with malaria on the day he is to start a new job. The hospital where he is successfully treated is shown as representing the effective and reassuring regime of modern medicine. Upon recovery he decides to join the WHO's Volta malaria eradication project as a sprayer. The film follows his training in some detail and shows some of the awkward situations which he faces during his first day at work, as a purveyor of new technology into an old and suspicious culture.
