Description

A manuscript collection of medical recipes, including some household and cookery recipes, in several hands. Bound volume with some loose leaves, with printed recipes pasted on the inside covers as well as within the manuscript.

The medical recipes include "For nervous disorders", "To cure sore Nipples", "For making Iceland Moss", "To sweeten the blood", "For the Thrush in Infants" "Antidotes for Poison". The household and cookery recipes include "Receipt for Dressing Shoes or Boots to Keep out Wet", "Raspberry Buns", "Imperial pudding".

Many of the recipes are attributed to named individuals (e.g. Mrs Doughty, Mrs Daniel, Miss Barnes, Dr John Mayor, Dr Hawkins, Mrs H. Blackburn, Mollie, Lottie, Kitty, Mrs and Dr Hallifax, Dr Johnstone of Birmingham), and some to printed sources (e.g. "Burchells Travels in Southern Affrica").

Some of the recipes are also dated: 28th March 1820 (p.54), 1824 (p.93), Feb 1837 (p.129), Nov 4 [18]22 (p.255).

Pp. 140-254 are blank, with some further recipes on pp.255-258, and an index to the contents on pp.260-269. The flyleaves contain printed recipes pasted in, one attributed to Devizes Gazette.
