Letters from Richard Whiteing to Dr Waddell, addressed from 45, Mecklenburgh Square, Bloomsbury unless stated otherwise. They deal with various issues of Whiteing's own health, as well as sanitation problems at his own cottage in Potter's Bar, and general social matters. /1 20 Nov 1900 enclosing a cheque for medical attendance, account of his state of health 'making headway towards perfect convalescence', and mention of his intention to try massage 'under Dr Kellgren the well know Swedish professor of the art'. Autograph letter, signed. /2 'Thursday', from Vine Cottage, Northaw, Potter's Bar: mentions that he has begun treatment. Autograph letter, signed. /3 13 Dec 1901: re Mrs Caird's reports of 'certain drain-like smells' in the neighbourhood of the Potter's Bar cottage. Biographical note

Richard Whiteing (1840-1928) English journalist and novelist. Author of Mr Sprouts - His Opinions (1867: collection of satirical sketches first published in the London Evening Star), the novel of London slum life No. 5 John Street (1889), and All Moonshine (1907). Dr Arthur R Waddell MD (Glasgow) of Potter's Bar, Hertfordshire, was his friend as well as medical advisor.
