    CLEARANCE AREAS. It will be remembered that in my last Annual Report I dealt with the steps which had been taken during the year 1932 to secure the clearance of those areas which had been declared to be clearance areas by a resolution the Council passed in February, 1931, and that at the end of the year 1932 the following areas remained to be dealt with, viz. :— (1) Attwell’s Yard Clearance Area. (2) The Bell Yard portion of Bell Yard and Occupation Road Clearance Area (including the common lodging-house). (3) Norton Street Clearance Area. (4) York Road Clearance Area. On the 30th May, 1933, the Council, having considered the methods by which the clearance of these areas should be secured, made Orders requiring the various owners of buildings on the respective areas themselves to demolish them. Objections to all these Orders were lodged with the Minister of Health, and the Minister accordingly ordered a public local Inquiry into the Council's application for their confirmation. This was held at the Council Offices in July, 1933. As a result the Minister confirmed (with certain modifications) all the Orders, and thirty-five families living in the respective areas will require to be rehoused by the Council, It has been decided to allot to them a sufficient number of the 150 new houses which the Council have resolved to erect on their Avenue House Farm Estate at Hillingdon, and as soon as these houses have been completed the occupants will be transferred and the owners will be required to demolish the con¬ demned properties. The Council were advised that it was not obligatory for them to provide alterna¬ tive lodging-house accommodation for the inmates of the common lodging-house when that is cleared. In the course of the summer of 1933 the Council (in common with all Local Authorities in the country) were asked by the Minister of Health to prepare a com¬ prehensive programme for the clearance within a period of five years of all buildings in all the areas in the Urban District requiring treatment as Clearance Areas. The Council’s Officers accordingly prepared a tentative list of areas, which was considered by the Council and provisionally approved by them, and on their instructions a programme was compiled and submitted to the Minister for the Clearance of all these areas within a period of three years instead of the five stipulated by him. It is probable that a supplementary list of areas will be prepared and submitted to the Council with a view to similar action being taken regarding them after the expiry of the three years mentioned. In October and December, 1933, respectively, the Council declared as clearance areas the following fifteen further areas in the Parishes of Uxbridge, Hillingdon West and Hillingdon East :— Vine Street C.A. No. 1. (1-10, Vine Street Cottages.) Vine Street C.A. No. 2. (14—18, Vine Street.) The Lynch C.A. No. 1. (Smith’s Buildings, etc.). The Lynch C.A. No. 2. (Lawn Road Cottages.) The Dell C.A. (The Dell.) Alpha Road, Hillingdon East C.A. (1-8, Alpha Cottages.) Butler Street, Hillingdon East C.A. (1-2, Butler Street.) Chapel Lane, Hillingdon East C.A. No. 1. (1-3, Chapel Lane.)
