About this work

Description

Papers re Campaign's concern about receiving donations from the 'Vermin Club' and the latter's use of their name in politically orientated literature. Includes correspondence, newspaper cuttings, Vermin Club literature, and letters to the Campaign from local Labour Party associations.

The Vermin Club was set up by some Conservatives in 1948 in objection to a speech made by the Minister of Health, Aneurin Bevan, who had called Tories 'lower than vermin'. The Club's aims were to raise money which would be donated to medicine not under state control, particularly cancer research. The Campaign did not wish to be connected to any political movement and was concerned that the Vermin Club's use of their name would alienate some supporters. The Club was generally criticised for associating cancer research funding with political persuasion.
