IT may be stated with a certain satisfaction that the medical art of our own day has witnessed a progressive development of the physical means of treatment, both in regard to increased knowledge of their action and more general recognition of their value. Among these means heat occupies a foremost position. An extraordinarily large number of methods of treatment, perhaps the majority of those belonging to the physical class, include the use of heat, and in every one of them the purely thermal action is, if not the only, at any rate by far the most real and efficient factor. It is true that mechanical and pharmaceutical effects also enter into nearly all these methods of applying heat; there are resins and salts and various other substances which assist in the action of medicinal baths, of warm and effervescing springs ; there are chemical and physical influences which not only come into play in such applications as the steam, peat and fango baths, but include even electrical principles as in the sun baths, or purely mechanical effects as in the sand baths and similar methods of treatment. In all cases, however, the important and decisive element is the purely thermal action. Now there is no doubt that in addition to the thermal effect all these accompanying elements exercise a varied and favourable influence in promoting the physiological end in view, so that this or that method of treatment appears better suited, according to the nature of its accompanying secondary elements, to a particular condition than some other allied method.
