About this work

Description

The play involves a cadaver found in the Seine. The wood engraving on p. 1 shows the four dramatis personae: right to left, Ganachard, a wealthy former soldier; Joseph, the servant of Charles Nourrisson; Angélique, daughter of Ganachard; and Charles Nourrisson. Nourrisson and Joseph had exchanged identities. A "fait-Paris" was a news story about a a recent event in Paris, often involving accidents or crimes: in this case the story had been made up and planted in the press by Nourrisson
