About this work

Description

Woodcut illustrating the 17th century text Xu Ping waike zhengzong (Orthodox Manual of External Medicine with Commentary by Xu Dachun), from an edition published in 1860 (10th year of the Xianfeng reign period of the Qing dynasty).

Right-hand illustration:

The illustration shows the disease location for ruju (breast abscess). Ruju is a form of mastitis, sthe main symptoms of which are local swelling and hardness, the swelling being hard to relieve.

Left-hand illustration:

This is an illustration of chi youdan (wandering erysipelas). This is a form of erysipelas found in children. The skin is bright red, with swellings that are small at first, gradually becoming larger. It owes its name to the fact that it is as red as cinnabar (dan), and its location 'wanders' (you) over the body. The image shows a woman holding a child. It does not provide detailed information about the condition.

Lettering

RIGHT-HAND ILLUSTRATION: Ruju (breast abscesses) are hard and putrid. LEFT-HAND ILLUSTRATION: Chi youdan (wandering erysipelas) is red and travels about.
