First page (first half-folio) of Wan shi ji shantang ji yanfang (The 'Hall of Benevolence' Collection of Tried and Tested Prescriptions from Ten Thousand Masters), compiled by an unknown author using the pseudonym The Hermit of Deer Park (Lu yuan jushi). Woodblock edition in three juan (volumes), published in 1536 (15th year of the Jiajing reign period of the Ming dynasty, Bing Shen year).
The first juan, headed 'Guangsi yaoyu' (Essential Theories Made Accessible) contains succinct accounts of the principles of administering medication to men and women, 'regulating the origin' (tiao yuan), regulating menstruation, 'stabilising the embryo' (antai) i.e. preventing miscarriage, etc. It includes 60 prescriptions.
The second juan contains 50 recipes for tonics and restoratives, and has an appendix recording two of the medical doctrines of Wang Yinjun (Yuan period, 1206-1368).
The third juan contains almost 60 remedies for micellaneous conditions. This image shows the first page (first half-folio) of the first juan.
Physical characteristics: 17.7 cm high x 11.1 cm wide. Eleven lines per half-folio. Double block of text (shuanglan). Double marginal heading (shuang yuwei). Bamboo paper. One seal. Annotated in red ink.
