About this work

Description

A dramatisation for school children on the practical applications of first aid. A doctor is initially fooled by a boy pretending to drown in a river; the boy thinks this is a good 'April fool' joke. A boy then really does nearly drown and is rescued by another boy. The doctor then invites the boys to learn first aid. He arranges to go to the school and in the school playground demonstrates resuscitation. He distributions first aid booklets to the eager children. They then experience various accidents in which children are injured. One child reports via a letter that a boy sprained his ankle whilst they were playing football on a bombsite. They use a door for a stretcher. Bandages are applied including ambulance men coming to aid of boy who has fallen out of tree. Children are awarded prizes of first aid kits (Elastoplast, naturally) by the doctor at a school ceremony. The children have delightful accents ranging from 'mockney' to middle class. One girl claims that her brother is a 'problem child'!
