Biographical note

During the 1920s and 30s numerous independent voluntary organisations in Scotland collected blood for local hospitals. The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Association was formally constituted on 5 Mar 1940 with 5 Regional Transfusion Services. In 1948 the Association remained an independent body receiving a government grant. In 1990 Scotland was one of the few countries in the world to have self-sufficiency in blood and blood products
