About this work

Description

Documentary looking at the difficulties facing people with a stutter or stammer, of which there are an estimated half a million in Britain. Steve Middleton is a young man who has had problems with his speech, accompanied by physical movements, since the age of about 3 years. He embarks on an intensive 3-day speech therapy course run by Anne Blight of the Starfish Project, where he learns a technique that makes a remarkable difference to his speech. Lee Payton (sp?) is an artist who has tried intensive speech courses but feels that they don't have a lasting effect. After his fiance gives birth to their first baby he finds that his speech is better when talking to his son. Max Drake is a teenager who suffers from bullying at school due to his stammer. He visits speech therapist Dr. Trudy Stewart who looks at the psychology of stuttering. Another speech therapist visits Max's class to talk about stammering and the effects of teasing. Gouri Lahl (sp?) was, until recently, a covert stammerer. She explains how she kept her stutter hidden from friends and family and we see her trying to get used to stammering in public. The programme ends with tips for non-stammerers to remember when talking to someone who stutters.
