About this work

Description

Fiona Phillips reports on the lack of support offered by the NHS to those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Her father Neville has the condition and she and her uncle are finding that their care alone is proving not to be enough. We hear about Barry and Yvonne - Yvonne has early-onset Alzheimer's and Barry has become her full-time carer with a little help from their daughter Claire. Research shows that a huge percentage of people with Alzheimer's are cared for by their family. Receiving a formal diagnosis seems to be part of the problem - without a diagnosis drugs can't be prescribed, and even after diagnosis drugs are only prescribed to those in advanced condition. The programme includes personal footage of Phillips' father as his condition deteriorates as well as accounts from relatives of other sufferers of the condition. We hear about the National Dementia Strategy and about why the plans it hopes to implement have not taken off due to lack of government funds.
