Outside the front door stands a man wearing a suit and a bowler hat, presumably the pharmacist Edward Brindle; assumed to be the Edinburgh pharmacist of that name mentioned in an obituary of his son (Brit. med. J., 1978, v.1, p. 724). The street number of the pharmacy is 190; next door at no. 188 is a stationer. According to the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories, the firm of Edward Brindle, chemist & druggist, was in business in Edinburgh from 1887 to 1956. From 1887 to 1899 the firm was at 184 Morrison Street, and from 1900 to 1956 at 190 Morrison Street. Charles Hislop, stationer & newsagent occupied 188 Morrison Street from 1900 to 1906 (e-mail from Andrew Bethune, Librarian, Edinburgh Room, City of Edinburgh, 17 June 2002). The photograph is therefore dated after 1899 and before about 1907
