About this work

Description

Manuscripta chimico-medica. In German and Latin: by various hands. Illustrated with a few rough pen-drawings of chemical apparatus, etc. A collection of short alchemical, chemical and iatro-chemical tracts, letters, receipts and oddments, written by various hands. The letters are addressed to Christoph Hercules Flöhl, pastor of Wurz, who is most probably the compiler of this collection. On the spine is a printed label: 'Manuscripta chimico-medica P.IX'. Most of the items in the collection seem to have been written during the period from the end of the 17th century, to about 1730. There are however some earlier items: Fol. 47 contains an iatro-chemical receipt against gout, dated 1607. Ff. 54, 55 is a mutilated quarto sheet folded, which contains notes on an alchemical smelting process, and is dated 28/3/1634, 4/4/1634. Ff. 118-126, which are badly damaged by damp, contain fragments of an alchemical work 'Ex antiquissima scriptura lib[enter] communicata mihi a Francisco Georgio Basta, Flandro, Quartirmagistro Regiminis Veterani Coll. Picolomini. Anno 1642, 31 Julii' (fol. 123v), which is followed by a fragment of a similar work by Caspar Gorlicensis in Latin and German, by the same hand. Other items which, by the script, may possibly be of late 16th cent. or early 17th cent. are found on ff. 89, 91-95, 131, 132, 174, 188-193, 198, 200, 203-208. The letters, all addressed to C. H. Flöhl, are as under: Ff. 23, 24 Raab (Matthaeus), an Augustinian monk, dated Camerino, 2/10/1724. 30, 31 Leopold (Johann Chrristoph) 'Occulist et Chyrurgus Junior in Wonsiedl [Wunsiedel]. -8/1712. A Johann Christoph Leopold [1680-1728] is entered in Jöcher-Rotermund. 80, 81 Conti (Carl Joseph) [1672-1737], theologian, dated Poglith [?], 9/5/1730. 116 From the same, dated Poglith, 31/7/1730. 82, 83 Weisse (Johann Gottfried), dated Nüremberg, 20/2/1722. 99, 100 Dopplemacher (Johann Gabriel) [1671-1750], Mathematician, dated, Nüremberg, 28/1/1729. 103, 104 Sehl (Johann Ignatius). n.p. 19/3/1730. 114, 115 Eckert (Johann Corbinian), Theologian, dated Abensberg, 26/12/1715.
