Conjoined twins of Pasir Pinji

Description

This documentary chronicles the planning and successful surgical separation, on 5th March 1981, of conjoined twin girls who were born in 1980. The surgery took place in University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Ischiopagus twins have a fused lower half of the two bodies, with spines conjoined end-to-end at a 180 degree angle. This condition represents only a small percentage of the cases of conjoining and is considered one of the most complex form of the condition as many organ systems are shared. Some of the physiological tests are described by the narrator as the twins are prepared for surgery, which took 10 hours in total. The babies are shown post-operatively at 6 days after the operation and then at 6 months; both are recovering well and have close to normal bladder and bowel function.
